When customizing notebooks, the weight of inner pages is one of the most critical yet often overlooked decisions. Measured in grams per square meter (gsm), paper weight directly affects writing experience, opacity, durability, and the overall perceived quality of the notebook. Choosing the right gsm depends largely on the notebook type and its intended use.
For everyday notebooks and student notepads, 70–80 gsm paper is the standard choice. This range strikes a practical balance between cost and lightness: the pages feel thin and supple, work well with ballpoint and gel pens, and are highly economical for bulk production. It is ideal for softcover notebooks, memo pads, exercise books, and promotional giveaways where budget efficiency matters most.
For business notebooks and hardcover journals, 80–100 gsm paper is the recommended sweet spot. At this weight, the pages feel more substantial, show minimal show-through with most writing instruments, and give the notebook a professional, premium feel. This range is widely preferred for corporate gifts, executive diaries, and professional planner books where image and quality matter.
For art journals and bullet journals, 100–120 gsm paper is worth the investment. Thicker paper prevents feathering and bleed-through even with fountain pens, markers, and brush pens, making it suitable for sketching, hand-lettering, and detailed layouts. It conveys a crafted, high-end positioning that supports a higher price point.
Beyond gsm, buyers should also consider paper texture (smooth vs. laid), ruling style (lined, dotted, blank), and any inner printing requirements such as calendars or company branding.
At SnowInk Printing, we offer a full range of inner paper options from 70 gsm economy stock to 120 gsm premium art paper, supporting complete OEM and ODM customization. From business notebooks to gift set collections, we help brands select the right paper weight to match their product positioning and target market.
